January 2018 saw thefoodpeople have their 13th birthday – teenagers at last!
During our 13 years, we've seen the launch of YouTube, Instagram and Twitter along with the iPhone and iPad. Gender equality is now high on the agenda, with Time's Up and Me Too movements. We've witnessed a global economic crisis and a recession, the war on plastic, an increase in 'wild weather' patterns and driverless cars. As well as new words in our vocabulary, like youthquake, selfie, food porn, head cam, house-made, cake-pop, group-hug, date night, onesie, flat white, fat tax, staycation, binge-watch, photobomb and babycino.
In food we've seen the rise of the forever food trends like comfort, health & wellness and convenience continue to evolve, vegan soaring to an all time high and grazing and sharing turn into an eating phenomena. We've seen Americana and burger gourmetisation and street food revolutionise the food scene. We've witnessed the cupcake trend, the growth of farm to table and El Bulli win best restaurant in the world and now it's gone. We've seen dine in and dine out deals, restaurant food delivered and the first female 3* chef in the UK. We've seen the phenomenal growth of lifestyle allergen avoiders and flexitarians, the blur between sweet and savoury and 3D printing. We've seen new Nordic cuisine, sous vide cooking, the Cronut, coconut water, fire cooking, unicorn, rainbow everything, Hygge, the Kimchi craze and the freakshake leading to the hybrid food movement.
