A big moment for the future of school food in the UK.
The Government has announced new, mandatory School Food Standards - including the removal of high-sugar foods from school menus. It's the first major overhaul in over a decade, and a vital step forward in tackling childhood obesity, improving nutrition, and reshaping how the next generation eats.
With one in three children leaving primary school overweight or obese, and tooth decay remaining the leading cause of hospital admissions for 5-9 year olds, this change couldn't come at a more critical time.
Proud to Support Chefs in Schools
At thefoodpeople, we're incredibly proud to support Chefs in Schools and The Food Foundation in helping drive this progress. It's a powerful example of what collaboration can achieve - turning advocacy into real, tangible change on plates across the country.
Alongside this national milestone, the work on the ground continues:
- Expanding school transformation programmes, including new activity in West Sussex
- Delivering high-quality meals at low cost, with schools achieving as little as £0.84 per child, per day
- Launching Snack Takeovers to replace less nutritious options with healthier alternatives
- Growing the School Chef Educator Programme, with new cohorts underway in the Northwest
- Supporting the wider School Food Project in partnership with leading organisations to make nutritious, delicious meals the norm in schools
There's real momentum behind better school food - and we're excited to keep playing our part in shaping a healthier future.
