We've spotted a few food highlights from down under which tell us that American-inspired comfort food is definitely having a popularity moment in Australia, with Deli-style sandwiches in particular trending, somewhat driven by the popular Chicago-style Italian sandwich featured on TV series The Bear.
In Brisbane, neighbourhood bistro, wine bar and cafe Cordeaux Social Club has partnered up directly with Disney+, on which The Bear is aired, to create its own tribute to the hot beef sandwich featured on the show. The Cordeaux Social Club will add its own twist to the sandwich featured, but you'll have to be quick if you want to try one as they're being served up exclusively between 27th to 30th July inclusive.
The sandwich is made by marinating boneless chuck steak slowly overnight in a garlic, onion, paprika and mustard seasoning. before smoking the meat until medium rare. From there it's seared, cooled and sliced thinly before being finished au jus from pan drippings and beef stock. The delicious-sounding beed is then topped with pickled vegetables and served in a sourdough bagette. Yum.
Further south in Melbourne, the locals are celebrating the opening of a new American diner style breakfast spot - Walrus. This casual diner was inspired by the owners' trips to the West Coast of the USA, particularly in Los Angeles - with nods to both what features on the menu and also the interior too.
Visitors can choose from a number of old-school American staples such as bacon, eggs and pancakes, or caramelised pecan pie, while the coffee is served from a vintage Coffee Queen machine, either black or white.
