Britain set for six weeks of sporting festivities

It's one of the biggest sporting competitions in the world and on Friday night six weeks of rugby celebration kicks off when England and Fiji get he Rugby World Cup underway at Twickenham.

During the course of the six week long rugby tournament Tesco predicts the following sales:

  • Beer and cider – More than 150 million bottles and cans
  • Crisps, nuts and snacks – 80 million packets
  • Pizzas – 9 million
  • Curries – 3.5 million
  • Pies – 3 million
  • Dips – 5 million

Tesco beer category spokeswoman Natasha Pitman said: "The party is set to start on Friday and for millions of rugby fans over the next six weeks it will all be about friends and family gathering together to watch the games.

"We know from previous tournaments that on days when home nations play demand for beer, pizzas, and other snacks rockets and continues to rise with each successive round.

"Foodwise, pizzas, curries and other ready meals will be in high demand during the tournament as rugby fans concentrate on watching the game."

An estimated 460,000 international rugby fans are set to visit Britain as a result of the tournament.

Nearly 860 Tesco stores will have special rugby tournament power aisles featuring food, drink and clothing for fans.

These stores will also have international wine sampling opportunities and a temporary tattoo station for young rugby fans.

On Saturday October 3, Tesco's Wembley Extra store will be hosting a Fun Day which will include a try kicking competition outside; a local rugby team will be helping pack customers' bags, and there will be food, ale and wine tastings throughout the day.
