Buzzing For Honey - Key Insights From Our Honey Healthwatching Report

Honey has been touted for its health benefits for millennia(!) but thanks to its hive of modern-day health creds – it has recently gained cult status in the wellness world. Indeed, as consumers continue to seek minimally processed alternatives to refined sugar – honey is hitting the sweet spot, and vying to be the modern sweetener of choice.

But we aren't just talking plain old runny honey; there are endless varieties of artisanal honeys to explore. Raw, unfiltered honeys, for instance, are being touted for their retention of beneficial enzymes, pollen and propolis compared to more processed versions. And there's lots of buzz around monofloral and single-source honey – think orange blossom or acacia honey, packed with nuanced flavour as well as medicinal properties. Meanwhile Manuka, Rata and Sidr honeys are highly prized for their potency and purity.

And when it comes to how best to enjoy these honeys… anything goes! Some brands and cooks for instance, are utilising them as sugar replacements in everything from snacks to sodas – often as part of a wider journey to create products that are perceived as clean, wholesome and minimally processed. But format innovation is rife, and goes well beyond using honey as a sweetener alt. Indeed, we're seeing the likes of honey lollipops, gummies and even pre-portioned sticks – to enjoy the sweet stuff straight up, and on-the-go.
