US brew house Manhattan Brewing Company has joined forces with the borough's unofficial home of doughnuts, Varsity Donuts, to create a maple bacon doughnut-flavoured beer.
The new creation is called Varsity MBD Stout, estimated to be high on the ABV scale at between 10-12%, and will launch at the brewing company's taproom this February.
Talking of the new brew, Manhattan Brewing Company owner Jake Voegeli said: "People love Manhattan Brewing Company and Varsity, so this is a great marriage of the two. It's an awesome collaboration with two great Manhattan businesses that's long overdue, and we don't know why we waited so long."
Kevin Peirce, owner of Varsity Donuts, added: "One of our most popular doughnuts is the maple bacon doughnut, so we just thought 'what if we made a beer out of it?' It's not a combination of what you'd normally think of, but it's going to be good.
"We dumped 50 pounds of maple bacon doughnut mash into a beer vat with smoked malt…making a stout, thick, dark and very sweet beer."
Varsity Donuts has been serving up doughnuts from its high street store in Aggieville, Manhattan, since 2011, offering not just somewhere to buy a range of delicious doughnuts, but also a place to enjoy time with others in a fun environment - described on their website as a cool, old-timey space with counter stools, a piano & Ping Pong table.
