There's no denying America's long-standing culinary influence across the globe, and with the country's 250th year of Independence fast approaching, the hyper-fixation with All Things Americana is looking set to reach even greater heights. What's behind its popularity?
Nostalgia – both lived and borrowed – plays a huge part, especially when unstable global dynamics heighten the demand for familiar comforts. And then there's the boom of US fast food dining spots in the UK, with Australia and Asian countries such as Singapore also expanding their portfolios.
So what Americana treats are consumers particularly leaning into? First up there's a definite love of sandos in all their guises, and given a new 'cheffy' lease on life. Think Michel-worthy Philly cheesesteaks, Sloppy Joes and po'boy sandwiches, or grilled cheese given a global makeover. Miso butter grilled cheese with kimchi and seaweed, anyone? Then there's the bottomless appetite for handheld streetfood classics… but again, these are reimagined through a modern lens. Think breakfast pizza with 'lox and schmears' as toppings, Tex-Mex corn dogs with masa batter and elote-inspired sauce, or smash burgers served with a pot of fondue for dipping (yes, really!).
And don't forget about indulging your sweet tooth! So many All American puddings and desserts are enjoying a revival – from chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls, and banana pudding to Baked Alaska. All with a little tongue-in-cheek (but thoroughly gourmet!) twist, of course. Sign us up for a banana pudding ice cream sundae, or cinnamon roll latte please!
