With climate change, food insecurity and social disconnection all real and pressing issues – some towns and cities are looking to Urban Farming as a solution. But why… and what exactly does it mean?
Well for starters, traditional supply chains are reliant on long distance transport, fossil fuel consumption and intensive industrial agriculture – all of which are susceptible to climate issues, conflicts and more. So urban farms can offer a more resilient, lower emission alternative – as well as providing a much needed 'happy place' for many! And luckily, new technologies and policies are making urban agriculture easier than ever.
Think pioneering projects to convert disused buildings and office spaces into modular farms, agri-hoods (aka residential communities purposely built around working farms), next gen greenhouses which are more temperature responsive, AI powered seeding systems… even pop up inflatable farms. Yes, really!
