The highly acclaimed Lima in Peru has been voted number 1 in this week's World's 50 Best Restaurants awards as Spain features highly taking 2nd, 3rd and 4th with Disfrutar, Diverxo and Asador Etxbarri respectively.
For 2023 the list includes restaurants from 24 territories in five continents worldwide and introduces 12 restaurants making their debut. Alongside the top 50 list other accolades were shared, including the World's Best Pastry Chef Award, won by Pía Salazar of Nuema, Quito; the World's Best Sommelier Award went to Miguel Ángel Millán of Diverxo, Madrid; whilst the Sustainable Restaurant Award went to Fyn in Cape Town.
Having placed second last year, Central moves up to the top spot, replacing Copenhagen's Geranium which moves into the Best of the Best Hall of Fame. The brain child of chefs Virgilio Martinez and Pía León, Central is an ode to Peru, with a menu that celebrates the unique biodiversity of the country's indigenous ingredients – guided by its research arm, Mater Iniciativa – along with its traditions and history, whilst championing sustainability.
Placing second this year is Barcelona's Disfrutar ahead of Madrid's Diverxo in third. Copenhagen's trending foodie scene continues to feature highly with Alchemist placing fifth, whilst the next placed European venue was Lido 84 in Gardone Riviera, Italy, placing seventh.
In the UK, London Marrylebone's Mexican hotspot Kol placed 23rd as the highest ranking British restaurant, ahead of Ikoyi in 35th place - the West African focused restaurant led by former tfp Culinary Congress speakers Jeremy Chan & Iré Hassan-Odukale. The third British restaurant making the list is regular to the World's 50 Best Restaurants, The Clove Club, also in London, placing 38th.
