McDonald's Australia has rolled out a couple of controversial new menu items down under, the Pineapple Fritter and Pineapple Sundae to celebrate summer, another example of brands continuing to blur the lines between sweet and savoury.
These two never-before-seen menu items launched on 10th January on menus around the country with many fans of the QSR chain unsure what to make of the additions, extending the controversial warm pineapple on pizza debate to the fried category now too.
McDonalds marketing director Samantha McLeod commented: "Whether you prefer your pineapple served warm or cold, we're giving our Macca's fans both this summer to put them to the taste test – we can't wait to hear what our customers think.
"With an exciting new pineapple snack and dessert, as well as the latest burger spin and the return of an Aussie favourite, Macca's is bringing the heat this summer with a menu that promises to deliver great taste and great quality, because nothing goes together better than Macca's and the Aussie summer."
The new fritters are described on the chain's website as Sweet and juicy pineapple covered in a crispy, golden crumbed coating. Whilst the slightly less controversial Pineapple Sundae is described as Creamy vanilla soft serve topped with a deliciously sweet and fruity pineapple sauce with juicy pineapple chunks.
