Spotlighting the trends and events that have occurred over the years in the month of November, as featured in our new 18 Years In Food & Beverage Trends EBook. Check out five highlights from between 2006 and 2023.
thefoodpeople was established in 2005 rooted in our purpose to shift the future of food and drink by inspiring and informing people, business and institutions to harness the power of trends and foresight. Why do we do what we do? Well, we believe that food & drink connects us all, by working with our community, industry and our collaborators, positive impact in food & drink can shape a better future for all.
Since then a lot has changed across the food and beverage landscape, change that we've looked to capture in our latest edition of the EBook, 18 Years In Food & Beverage Trends. We look at what events, people, culture, regulations, technologies, and products defined these years, as well as the changes and impact on these for the future.
Here are some of the highlights captured from month of November between 2006 and 2023.
2011 - This month saw Box Park, the world's first pop up mall, being built in London's Shoreditch and set to open this November. Initially built to nurture smaller edgier brands, Box Park Shoreditch went on to be redeveloped to house street food vendors as well as exciting bars and pop-ups. We saw the Danish government introduce a fat tax on fatty foods to try to create and develop a healthier population. At the time, 47% of Danes were overweight and 13% obese according to the Danish National Health and Medicines Authority. And the first Granger & Co opened in London's Westbourne Grove.
2014 - The cornerstone of Australian bakery, the Lamington, was slowly becoming a global success. Delicate sponge, chocolate frosting and desiccated coconut. Bulla Dairy Foods launched a Lamington ice cream to honour the Australian classic in a reinvigorated way. The 2015 Chicago Michelin stars were announced with Grace being elevated to three stars - joining Alinea (who had held this accolade since the awards started in Chicago in 2011). Finally, we saw Tesco launch Turkey & Stuffing doughnuts for Christmas.
2015 - The latest superfood to grace our diets was turmeric. This Indian spice had long been used in traditional curries, yet the western cultures had not paid adequate attention to its potential health benefits. This year more creepy-crawlies made their way into our diets... Grub Kitchen in Pembrokeshire, was the UK's first insect restaurant. Whilst this month saw our second tfp Trends Event take place.
2019 - Following the work and campaining of names like Jamie Oliver, kids food was really turning a healthier corner, way beyond hot dinners. One brand capitalising on the trend was Tiny Organics, an American nutrition company, that launched its 100% organic, fresh-frozen whole kids foods across the US. thefoodpeople's 6th annual Trend Event launching the 2020/21 trend book, took place once again at The Lindley Halls in Westminster, London. Whilst, high-end department store Harrods opened H Café, an all-day dining outlet that featured a selection of pastries, salads and toasties, all paired with speciality teas and coffees.
2021 - The Michelin Guide announced its stars for Tokyo, and it was another headline-worthy year for Japan's capital as it shored up its status as the city with the most Michelin stars (203 in total). UK supermarket Sainsbury's announced it was trialling 'Smart shop Pick & Go' – a cashier-less 'shop and walk out' store – in London's Holborn neighbourhood. Whilst finally, Giuseppe Dell'Anno was crowned the Great British Bake Off Winner 2021.
