American fried chicken powerhouse Popeyes has chosen Westfield Stratford for its new flagship London restaurant, set to open next month. The new venue will take the place of a KFC restaurant already on site and acts as the start of the chain's longer term plan of expansion of the Louisiana-style fried chicken restaurants around the UK.
Founded in New Orleans in 1972, Popeyes is not the first fried chicken giants to make a move on the UK market of late, following Chick-fil-A's short-lived venture here before quietly retreating after coming up against opposition and protests to its practices and beneficiaries.
The new UK menu will not differ from that over in the U.S., best known for its popular tenders, nuggers and the infamous fried chicken sandwich (pictured). The announcement and upcoming opening are a sign of the chain's weight in times of doubt caused by both COVID and Brexit in the UK.
Time will tell as to how he UK consumers respond to the new chain landing. Find out more about the Popeyes chain here.
