Supermarket chain Tesco has announced launch plans for an exciting new own-brand PIWI wine, one that's been developed to help tackle the ever-present challenges of climate change.
The new Tesco Finest Floreal wine uses a PIWI grape variety which blends American, Asian and European wild grapevines in order to deliver high resistance to fungal diseases including Oidium, Mildew and also Black Rot.
PIWI wines are attractive and sustainably produced wines from grape varieties with resistance properties. Their resistance to disease allows for a significant reduction in the use of pesticides, thereby protecting the environment whilst maintaining the quality of the wine produced.
The French Floreal grape results from the interspecific crossbreeding of Villaris and a descendant of Muscadinia rotundifolia. It's described by Tesco as being developed by passionate vine growers and viticulturalists committed to sustainability, the Floreal grape variety is now grown in idyllic French vineyards, nestled among wild flora. Floreal's specific hardiness minimises the need for intervention, fostering greater biodiversity. This remarkable grape offers bright freshness and delightful notes of gooseberry, citrus, and exotic fruit, culminating in a luxurious smooth finish.
Charlotte Lemoine, Tesco product developer for French wines, said: "We know how important sustainability is for many of our customers, so we're incredibly proud to be launching Finest Floreal. For Tesco to now be offering a trail-blazing new wine variety demonstrates our ongoing ambitions to provide our shoppers with the best wine range possible, with quality-led innovations at great value prices."
