A Barista from Melbourne's Axil Coffee Roasters has taken top honours at the World Barista Championships for 2022 having last month been awarded Australia's Coffee Making Champ at the 2022 World Bar Australian Specialty Coffee Association (ASCA) National Coffee Championships.
Anthony Douglas took the title today at the World Coffee Championships aptly held in Melbourne, Australia's heartland when it comes to coffee. Having recently won the Australian title, Douglas represented his country in a field of nearly 50 competitors which was then whittled down to just six finalists, representing Canada, Japan, Sweden, UK, USA and of course Australia.
The finalists then had to impress a panel of judges with an espresso, a mil-based coffee and then finally a signature drink of their own. Douglas came out on top to take the award at the ceremony which brings to a close the Melbourne International Coffee Expo which has hosted 120 exhibitors since Tuesday, showcasing everything from the latest and most innovative roasting technologies to coffee machines, gadgets, coffee brands, plant-based milks and much more.
Deemed by many as one of the world's biggest coffee hotspots, Melbourne turned out in full force for the exhibition with over 16,000 visitors this week.
Douglas has been with Axil Coffee Roasters for nearly a decade now, working his way up the independent roastery. The brand now has 16 locations across Melbourne and offer direct to consumer coffee as well as wholesale, equipment and accessories and barista training too - now officially with the world's best.
