Starward Whisky, based in Victoria, became the first Australian spirit producer to be crowned the best in the world at last month's World Spirits Competition.
The distillery took home more double-gold awards than any of the 5000 entrants to the annual awards which are touted as the 'Olympics' for the spirits industry. Entrants to the awards come from brands all around the world, showcasing whisky, gin, vodka and tequila.
"Our vision to bring an approachable and delicious Melbourne whisky to life shines through this accolade and it wouldn't be possible without the passion of our team," a company representative commented.
The process involves twelve judges who blind test samples from all entrants over a period of over four months, unaware of what they're sipping before then awarding a medal. A panel then decides on the final rating. Starward took an impressive 12 double-gold medals at the ceremony.
