Rolls, scrolls, buns… whatever your terminology preference, sufficed to say cinnamon rolls are having a moment!
These doughy buns are being celebrated for their soft, sticky, comforting, nostalgic goodness – a far cry from the precision-perfect lamination of croissants, which have arguably been the 'it' pastry of choice in recent years. Bakeries and cafes across the world are leaning into the trend, with new concepts popping up that are entirely dedicate to the cinnamon-spiked swirls.
But it's not just comfort and nostalgia driving their popularity… Cinnamon buns are also a brilliant blank canvas for creativity, as they can act as a base for all manner of fun twists and interpretations. Sometimes it's about going over-the-top with a finishing touch… think cinnamon buns topped with oat crumble or marshmallows, or apple pie-inspired cinnamon rolls finished with baked apple slices and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Spoon, please!
Other times it's about playing with size and format – for instance mini and XL varieties, or cinnamon bun tier cakes. And of course, there's flavour play and mashups aplenty… think flavours of banana bread, carrot cake, or red velvet swirled through the more-ish dough base. Or why not go a little bit retro, with the likes of PB&J rolls, or pineapple upside-down rolls. Or indeed, who says they even need to be sweet! We're seeing lots of exciting savoury takes, using ingredients like cheese, miso or tomato to redefine the idea altogether. We'll take one of each, please!
