Key Insights From Our Crisps, Nuts & Savoury Snacking Report

Snack-ification is on the tip of everyone's tongues at the moment, as the old rules of when, what and how you eat are increasingly thrown out the window.

Three key takeouts from our report are:

  1. Mini Meals – Is it a meal? Is it a snack? Does it matter? With snack-ification on the rise, we see the lines around what constitutes a savoury snack being decidedly blurred. Croquettes are popped in the oven for a mid-afternoon pick me up, where once crisps would have sufficed. Mini hand pies or loaded potato skins satiate the 4pm hunger pangs. And there's chicken every which way – from next gen popcorn chicken, to on-the-go chicken meatballs.
  2. Flavour, Squared – When it comes to flavours, snack brands are 'doubling down' approach – aka employing 'flavour on flavour', in the guise of snacks like beef jerky flavoured with soy and miso for the ultimate umami-kick. Not to be outdone in the umami stakes, brands up the ante on cheesy snacks – think aged parmesan crackers with extra cheese on top, or triple cheese nachos. And of course, we can't forget about flavour-layering in the guise of sweet-and-savoury mashups. Chocolate-covered rosemary potato chips, anyone?
  3. Protein Forever – Protein-rich snacks go from strength to strength – bolstered by the popularity of high protein diets, as well as the advent of GLP-1 medications. But this time round, it's about much more than boiled eggs and nuts. Cottage cheese is having a moment, finding its way into everything from grab-and-go snack pots to mini pizzas. And that's not the only cheese that's trending – in the snacking space, everything from cheese-and-pickle wraps and baked cheddar tuiles come out to play.
