October Over The Years - Exploring Our 18 Years In Food & Beverage Trends EBook

Spotlighting the trends and events that have occurred over the years in the month of October, as featured in our new 18 Years In Food & Beverage Trends EBook. Check out five highlights from between 2006 and 2023.

thefoodpeople was established in 2005 rooted in our purpose to shift the future of food and drink by inspiring and informing people, business and institutions to harness the power of trends and foresight. Why do we do what we do? Well, we believe that food & drink connects us all, by working with our community, industry and our collaborators, positive impact in food & drink can shape a better future for all.

Since then a lot has changed across the food and beverage landscape, change that we've looked to capture in our latest edition of the EBook, 18 Years In Food & Beverage Trends. We look at what events, people, culture, regulations, technologies, and products defined these years, as well as the changes and impact on these for the future.

Here are some of the highlights captured from month of October between 2006 and 2023.

2009 - Budget buying was at the forefront of many people's choices this year as the economic crisis saw customers economising and restricting their purchases to the basics. Guinness celebrated its 250th birthday, having made first appearance in 1759. Whist we saw the rise of the cupcake. Often reserved for birthday parties or baby showers, the cupcake fast became a ubiquitous figure of the late noughties.

2012 - HelloFresh launched in America, aiming to deliver recipes to the busiest consumers - enabling them to cook up gourmet-style home-cooking. All dishes wouldn't take longer than 30 minutes to prepare and should only contain 500-750 calories. We saw The Ledbury celebrate topping the National Restaurant Awards list of 100 top eateries in the UK for the third year in a row. Finally, this year's GBBO winner was John Whaite.

2015 - To celebrate their 65th birthday this month, Dunkin' Donuts launched a vanilla cupcake flavoured coffee. The Vanilla Cupcake Flavoured Coffee was the latest addition to the Dunkin' Donuts Bakery Series packaged coffee range. 'Dairy dodging' entered the consumer psyche. Over the previous 10 years to this point, UK dairy consumption fell by 30%. Finally, The World Health Organisation classified processed meat as carcinogenic this month.

2017 - We saw US burger chain Shake Shack collaborate with Fergus Henderson of St John to create a unique burger featuring eel for a limited time at the Madison Square Gardens Shake Shack venue. It came at a time that consumers were beginning to return to once-forgotten meats and fish. IKEA created a pop-up vertical farm in collaboration with researchers from the SPACE10 lab and was on display at the London Design Festival.

2020 - This month saw thefoodpeople launch The TFP Foundation. At the heart of everything we do is 'shifting the future of food and drink'.thefoodpeople foundation was set up to use food as a force for good by supporting food, health and education in children and young people. Costa Coffee in the UK brought out a smaller serve, The Mini. And, we saw hyper realistic cakes come to the fore. The ultimate blurring between non-cake and cake threw the Twitter-sphere into an existential panic.
