Key Insights From Our Nordic and Atlantic Diets Reports

With so many tech advancements and influencer-fuelled lifestyle trends hitting headlines – it's easy to think that today's diet trends are all about breaking new ground. But actually, there are plenty of diet trends that are centred on back-to-basics formulas which prioritise nutrition over weight loss, and champion ancient techniques, holistic wellness and perhaps even some sustainability credentials to boot.

Over in Healthwatching, we look at several of these, including two which have been garnering particular buzz of late – the Nordic and Atlantic diets.

  • First up is the Nordic diet, which celebrates the traditional cuisines of the Nordic regions – including Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Iceland. The diet is centred around sustainable and seasonal produce like wild caught fish, root vegetables and hedgerow berries. Studies suggest following the diet could help reduce cholesterol and regulate blood pressure; and now even fine dining chefs and social media influencers are jumping on board and serving up plenty of showstopping dishes and recipe ideas that lean on the diet's principles. Think tinned salmon, cabbage rolls, meatballs , pickles and rye bread.
  • Not to be outdone, biting ad the Nordic heels is none other than… the Atlantic diet. Rooted in the heritage of Southern Europe, in particular the traditional cuisines of northwest Spain and Portugal – the Atlantic diet has been gaining traction, bolstered by reports of its health credentials. It centres around home cooking, seasonality, fresh harvested fruits and veg, locally reared meat and wild fish, and plenty of olive oil. It shares plenty of common ground with the Mediterranean diet, but welcomes on board more readily, the likes of bread, potatoes, brassicas and dairy. Naturally low in ultra processed foods, because of its focus on homemade, local and seasonal – this is one to watch, as consumers lean into real, whole, recognisable foods.
